We are overjoyed to share that Conner Shih and Natalie Gao have made team history by earning the first Leland Policy bid to the TOC in many years!
It's an incredible achievement of which they should be so proud! Years of their work went into this as the technical skills, research base, and adaptation techniques required for a policy bid are extreme indeed...and are carved out of hard-won experience and extreme dedication over many seasons, as well as the ground work and team support provided in previous years and up to this moment! they had to persist through many challenges and learn to accept tough losses on the way, yet remain motivated to learn before reaching this milestone.
In speech and debate, we have to acknowledge that the work of so many others contributes to our success and if we are open to collaboration and advice, that takes us so much farther...and that a culture of support makes all the difference. we are grateful to all the inspirational policy speakers who have helped pave this path throughout Leland's decades of policy competition and to the entire circuit squad and Policy Leadership Team for expanding participation in this style of technical debate. special thanks to coaches Allen Kim and Hannah Lee and Young Park for their specialty national circuit coaching and constant availability to the team as well as the work of all policy team members in helping Conner & Natalie reach this milestone!

Invitational Participation
I am suspending invitational offerings for the time being. This does not include John Lewis or Gig Harbor (for league 1 make ups).
To date there have been 4 instances of judges being unavailable for their full judging obligation. In all 4 of those instances I was not made aware of the conflict until there were less than 24 hours before round 1. In all 4 of those instances I could have set their schedules in advance to meet their needs. These judge issues make me look unprofessional and unprepared. I know the folks that run these invitationals personally. It embarrasses me when I have to email, or text, or go to a zoom and explain that a judge isn't available for the blocks of time I signed them up to judge. Schedule are published on tabroom....when you ask your parent to judge, you should be showing them the schedule so they can see what they are agreeing to do.
I will let you know when we are returning to Invitational participation.

Pasta Night
PASTA NIGHT!!!!! WOOHOOOO!!!!! Our yearly tradition of playing games, eating food, and bonding as a team is back after being on hiatus for a year (rip Virtual Chipotle Night 2020). This is by far one of the best Speech and Debate events of the year and we encourage you all to come!
Pasta Night will be on October 22nd from 5:30-9:30 (tentative). It will take place in the cafeteria (but we will be eating outside because of COVID guidelines) :0
If you are interested in coming to Pasta Night fill out this form by Wednesday, October 13th: https://forms.gle/afdb51sLEVUu9wYw8
If you fill out this form you are not obligated to attend—but we need a rough estimate of the number of people attending so we can order enough food, so please be mindful while filling out this form
p.s. If enough people come to Pasta Night, Amber and Jasper will eat A LOT of hot sauce (the spiciest one is a ghost pepper hot sauce). Maybe they will also sing an original song for karaoke…... Let’s make them suffer >:)

A Fun Fact from Mrs Northrop
FYI, Jason Sudeikis and Paul Rudd both did speech and debate at Shawnee Mission West HS in suburban Kansas City (Kansas side), 7 years apart. They had the same coach, Sally Shipley, and each of them brings her up often in interviews etc. Mrs. Shipley, the neighbor upstairs in "Ted Lasso,” is a nice reference to Sudeikis' coach in high school. Paul Rudd was a national finalist in HI in 1986, further proof that he doesn’t age. See https://www.google.com/.../local/article211878834.html...
